INVESTING IN PEOPLE – Knowledge is Power
Mangwanani is committed to Women Empowerment. The notion to employ women from rural, previously disadvantaged backgrounds and to train and develop them from therapist level to management level is the founding principle of Mangwanani African Spa.
Mangwanani has trained thousands of previously disadvantaged Woman to become proud, skilled Therapists, Trainers, Administrators, Reservations Agents and Managers!
Mangwanani is exceptionally proud that every single Mangwanani Branch is run by a previously disadvantaged lady that has been trained and empowered to become the Branch Manager!!
We spotlight one of our Managers, Virginia Matea who was the very first Mangwanani therapist!
Virginia was living with her boyfriend that was employed at a Lodge in Kyalami that belonged to Erin’s sister (Erin is the founder and current CEO of Mangwanani). Virginia was unable to find work and approached Erin for a job at the Lodge. As there were no positions available at the lodge, Erin offered Virginia the opportunity to study massage therapy through Healing Hands Academy. “I have always been interested in the Beauty Industry, but never had the money to study any courses” says Virginia.
When Erin opened the very first African Day Spa in 2002, at Mangwanani River Valley, Virginia started as the first therapist and today she is a proud Branch Manager of Mangwanani’s Royal Elephant branch.
Currently Virginia is trained in Computer Skills and Customer Care and is studying a NQF Level 5 Management Course through Mangwanani.
“My journey at Mangwanani has been a big step in my life. From being a therapist in the beginning to today being able to write emails, do marketing for my branch and communicate better with clients from day to day. There is so much I can say about my journey with Mangwanani – stories to tell children, grandchildren, guests and the community!”
Virginia mentioned that the most significant thing over the last 13 years has been her development and improvement. Her skills, knowledge and interpersonal skills have improved vastly over the years. Years of experience have also boosted her confidence and productivity as well as equipped her better to deal with difficult situations.
“I am who I am today because of Mangwanani. I am proud to have grown and have become a better leader because of Mangwanani. I am also proud to say that I was able to renovate and decorate my house with my earnings. I also own a Spaza shop which I purchased with one of the “long service/profit” pay out that I received from Mangwanani. None of this would have been possible without the opportunities I was given at Mangwanani”
At Mangwanani we believe that knowledge is power and that the most valuable resource in any company is a human one. We consistently provide regular in-house training nationally to all our therapists, including refresher courses on continual basis.
Currently we have a number of our employees on courses supplied to them free of charge through the company. The NQF Level 5 Generic Management course is one of the courses that many of our employees are on. This course aims to develop our people in the area of management and includes outcomes such as: Managing first line managers; initiating, developing, implementing and evaluating operational strategies, projects and action plans; monitoring and measuring performance; leading a team; building key relationships and enhancing team spirit.
Another course that our employees are currently doing is the Beauty Technology NQF Level 4 course which includes focusing on salon skills, knowledge and values needed to maintain service excellence within a beauty services environment.
We continue to invest in our people to grow our business. Our aim is to create successful individuals through training and development. Successful people all working together create a successful business!
