Mangwanani- Empowering Women since 2002
Be assured that your experience at any of our spas is so much more than just a blissful pampering experience- you can also be proud that you are supporting Women Empowerment in South Africa.
August or Women’s Month as it is known in South Africa, is a momentous month for the Women of South Africa and specifically for Mangwanani, as it signifies Women Empowerment and Equality, which is the foundation of Mangwanani’s core mission and organisational values.
Women’s Day on 9th August is a day that commemorates the 1956 protest lead by Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Albertina Sisulu and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn. Approximately 20 000 Women from all over the country took to the streets of Pretoria to stage a peaceful march to the Union Buildings to rise up against the legislation that required black South Africans to carry a “pass” during the Apartheid era.
After dropping off bundles of petitions containing more than 100 000 signatures at the Prime Minister’s offices, they stood in silence for thirty minutes. It is on this day that the famous song was composed in honour of this momentous occasion, “Wathint’ Abafazi Wathint’ imbokodo!” (You strike a Woman, you strike a rock!)
The march on 9 August 1956 is both a reminder of the great women who helped mould South Africa and the women who continue to lead the country forward.
Since its inception in 2002, Mangwanani has remained committed to providing rural women with opportunities that enable true empowerment. More than simply employing these women, we provide them with training and assistance to gain accredited qualifications which in turn gives them the opportunity to establish career development and growth at Mangwanani.
Today, the majority of Mangwanani’s branch managers are from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and have been developed from therapists at grass roots level to management level through this empowerment notion.
Women Empowerment has always been Mangwanani’s ethos and we continue to focus on the development of Women and providing them with opportunities for a better life.
